Should Mario Kart 8 Be Enhanced Even Further For The Nintendo Switch 2?

Just before 2025 began, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose and Rouge the Bat listed their New Year’s resolutions on the tenth episode of TailsTube [51]. Speaking of in with the new, there is quite a lot of speculation on Nintendo’s forthcoming successor to the Switch and rumour has it that it could be revealed at some point this March or later [17] [18] [19]. Quite like how there was a third compilation of The Sims 2 titled “The Sims 2 Double Deluxe” [66], I suspect that there can be an enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe titled “Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe” [33]. However, I know what you are probably thinking. Wouldn’t another port of Mario Kart 8 for Nintendo’s next console be pointless if it will provide backwards compatibility? If that will be the case due to Nintendo’s history of backwards compatibility, the next title ought to be a direct sequel possibly titled “Mario Kart 9”, but the reason why some would predict a second part of Mario Kart 8 is that it is challenging to think of what could top Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with all six waves of DLC aside from possibly a few more additions that shall be explained along the way [33] [61]. Furthermore, let us discuss the potential of a second enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 as it has been over a decade since its revolutionary release for the Nintendo Wii U [32].

I believe that a second port of Mario Kart 8 consisting of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and all six waves of DLC in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass would result in the Crazy Eight being in THREE colours [32] [33]! Perhaps the third colour can either be green or yellow, even if that could result in the Crazy Eight being in the colour scheme of the pansexual or polysexual flag turned upside down [22] [26]. But then again, perhaps some Mario Kart racers would be more intrigued by the Crazy Nine. [61]

 
Less may be more sometimes, but “Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe” or Mario Kart 9 can welcome some more characters in the roster, such as:

• Honey Queen to also bring back the purple Peach Parasol [31]
• R.O.B. who could also return with a skin based on his Japanese-exclusive design for the Famicom [35] [79]
• Nabbit [58]
• Dixie Kong [58]
• Pac-Man to honour the impact of the Mario Kart Arcade games for arcade admirers [6]
• Monty Mole [58]
• Princess Zelda [7]
• An Octoling girl and an Octoling boy from Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3 [23]

Perhaps there can be some new skins for certain characters besides some new competitors. I recall a petition to bring on the option to race as a Mii without a helmet about a decade ago [16], but I guess we ought to maintain a good example for the young ones. There can be a few new skins for the two Villagers and a skin for Isabelle based on her Autumn and Winter outfits from Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp [30] [32] [33]. Perhaps these new competitors can appear in a new Booster Course Pass sometime after the overall reception of "Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe" and we shall expand on that in a jiffy [61].

I would not mind Cranky Kong becoming a racer in the Mario Kart series for the first time, despite his age [54]. Speaking of old age, if Disney hates the elderly, how come Tala, Moana’s grandmother remained supportive of her as a manta ray spirit in Moana 2 and is also a crew member in the eleventh season of Disney Speedstorm [13] [29]? [54]

Due to quite some unfortunate legal issues regarding Ms. Pac-Man [24] [45], she would have to be replaced with Pac-Girl, Pac-Marie or Pac-Mom if Pac-Man were to be a racer in the main Mario Kart series [6] [24] [45]. [45]

 
There can be a few things in “Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe” or Mario Kart 9 to make up for how stress-inducing and money-hungry Mario Kart Tour has been [74], especially how its gacha mechanism led to a lawsuit in 2023 [70] [71]. As a Nintendo nerd, I would love at least one of my favourite kart designs from Mario Kart Tour to return in “Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe” [74] [75] [77] [78]. Just imagine the Rose Taxi with the Crimson Slim tyres (and the purple Peach Parasol from Mario Kart 7 [31]) [32] [33] [75]! And do not forget about some of the fantastic glider designs and attires for certain characters throughout the tours [58] [59] [60], but not all of them have to return in “Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe” or Mario Kart 9. I recall considering Mario Kart Tour Nintendo’s Marmite as a Nintendo nerd would either love it or hate it [75], but reflecting on several courses from the app based on countries returning throughout the waves of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Booster Course Pass [36] [61], several karts, gliders and outfits for certain characters from Mario Kart Tour, such as the Macharon from the first Paris Tour in late 2019, the 8-bit Mario Jumping Mario glider from the Mario. Bros Tour in early 2020 and Rosalina’s gorgeous Aurora outfit from the Vancouver Tour can return in an enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe [58] [59] [60]. 

Imagine being able to race as a Toad in his Pit Crew attire [36]! [57]

Let us hope no wicked witch will poison THIS kart [12]! [60]

 
A second Booster Course Pass ought to not only bring on some more racers but also introduce new cups and possibly some new stages for battles [61]. There might as well be new incarnations of the Mario and Luigi cups from Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit [55]. It would make sense if Pac-Man makes an appearance as a racer and there would be a new cup named the “Pac-Man Cup” under Bandai Namco’s permission as part of a new Booster Course Pass as that would make a wave special in its own way [6] [55] [61]. If the Paratroopa from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! returns to the roster [34], a new cup might as well as be called the “Red Shell Cup”, as uninspired as that sounds. As for new stages for all five battle modes [33], I believe there could be recreations of Pipe Plaza from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart DSand Funky Stadium and Chain Chomp Roulette from Mario Kart Wii [34] [35] [37]. Just imagine pressing the R button again to see another pair of rows of cups to race in as you choose which one to try and win in an even more ambitious port of Mario Kart 8, along with new or familiar stages for the Battle modes [33].

Perhaps a new cup can be titled “Pink Gold Cup” with its emblem being Pink Gold Peach’s crown as a hint of some explanation for her existence that is likely to be similar to Metal Mario’s [32] [33] [39]. [58]

And of course, new cups means new trophies! [55]

A “retro” mode could allow new racers to feel quite humble towards the essences of Super Mario Kart for ‘90s kids who fondly remember the vibes of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System days [40]. This mode would include the roster of the main stars in their classic looks from the first Mario Kart game in the series. Can you imagine Princess Daisy racing in her classic look from Super Mario Land and Mario Party 3 [57]? There can be interpretations of a few modern courses in 16-bit graphics, such as Coconut Mall from Mario Kart Wii and Luigi’s Mansion from Mario Kart DS [35] [37], but perhaps not too many to choose from to maintain the focus of the high-definition aesthetics of today [33]. But still, it would especially be interesting to see Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy, Isabelle and the two Villagers racing in the Animal Crossing track from the Crossing Cup in the 16-bit style as it would combine nostalgia with modern flair [32] [33] [40]. The aspects of recreating the classic racing in Super Mario Kart for “Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe” would be heavily inspired by the Super Mario Kart Tour in Mario Kart Tour [36] [58] [59] [60], along with the 1964 events in Mario & Sonic At The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games [72] [73].
 

On the other side of the steering wheel, a “retro” mode would be more effective in a direct sequel to Mario Kart 8rather than a second enhanced port. Nonetheless, it would be a swell minigame, regardless of its debut in a sequel or a port. [64]

Since the title of a second enhanced version of Mario Kart 8 could be titled “Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe”, why not bring back the aspect of racing as two characters from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! as a new mode [34]? This could especially be effective in multiplayer mode, whether you and your sibling or your significant other would want to cooperate with you or compete against you. I would love to race as Pauline and Rosalina together within a long overdue alliance [50], as well as a pink partnership between Pink Gold Peach and Peachette [33]. Can you imagine Baby Peach and Baby Daisy being adorable damsels in success on the track [32] [37] [80], along with Isabelle and a Villager working together outside of the duties of running a town in Animal Crossing: New Leaf [81] [82]? Bringing back the playability of two competitors racing together against other duos as a new mode that could be titled "Teamwork Mode" would be a treat for 2000s kids who fondly remember racing as more than one racer back in the Nintendo GameCube days [34]. Aside from that, I would also like to see a list of missions to try and accomplish like the ones from Mario Kart DS as another treat and fun source of challenge for my fellow 2000s kids [35] [62].

Kudos to WumbleWasp for this intriguing concept of a sequel to Mario Kart: Double Dash!! that makes me imagine the idea of two characters racing together returning in an enriched port of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Mario Kart 9. [80] 

Remember the special items from Mario Kart Double Dash!! and other instalments known for reserving certain items for certain racers [34] [36]? I think two items that can return in “Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe” or Mario Kart 9 and be used by any character are the Giant Banana and the Heart [63]. [63]

Is there anything that is probably better off left out of the final cut? Well, the first-person perspective from Mario Kart 7 is a good concept [31], but it still makes sense to leave it to racing games that are primarily known for steering in a first-person view, such as Desert Bus [49]. Wait! No! Scratch that! Putting the action of a racing game in such an intentionally boring driving simulation would turn it into a crazy bus [48]! Wait! What the heck am I saying?! Leave the racing to Double-Deckers from Mario Kart Tour [60], buses! Speaking of Mario Kart Tour, as previously mentioned, I do not doubt that many of my fellow players will agree that a port of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo’s successor to the Switch can help us forget about the greediness of Mario Kart Tour’s microtransaction deals [74] [77] [78]. Chances are that Pac-Man may not be playable outside of the Mario Kart Arcade series as copyrighted collaborations can be costly (and a lawsuit would be launched if a character is not collaborated with respectfully or if credit is given to the wrong person [10]) [6]. There cannot be enough room for everything, so the best possible choices should also be considered the right ones.

If you like the first-person view in Mario Kart 7, more power to you [31]. Keep an eye out for bugs that may show up occasionally though [49].

 
In conclusion, a second port of Mario Kart 8 fittingly titled "Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe" sounds like a great way to honour the success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe that is a notable part of what made up for the Nintendo Wii U being the worst selling Nintendo console in history [33] [83]. However, it could be more effective to bring on a full-on sequel to Mario Kart 8 titled “Mario Kart 9” that consists of the visual masterfulness of Super Mario Odyssey [41], returning racers from previous instalments [34] [35], a retro mode and more [40], especially if the next console from Nintendo is backwards compatible with all our favourite titles for the Switch [17] [18] [19]. There is also hope for the recently announced successor to Minecraft by the working title of “Minecraft 2” [46]. In the meantime, despite how tiresome and uninspired the scenario of a teenaged Peter Parker being an awkward high school student has become to some of us [69], Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man still has some potential to stand out on its own accords with its eye-catching animation style before its premiere on Disney+ near the end of this month [27], which will be after many Nintendo nerds re-experience the rise of the Tiki Tak Tribe in Donkey Kong Country Returns HD [14] [42] [43]. There is still a lot of time to dream of the outcomes of Minecraft 2 and the next Mario Kart game for Nintendo’s next gaming system [17] [18] [19] [46].

By now, we ought to have learned a few things from the troubling impacts the first half of the 2020s left on us and the mistakes we made at the time [1] [2] [25] [44]. In spite of what troubled us and how we acknowledged our own faults at some points [3] [4] [10] [65] [68], we can continue to blossom on our own accords [15], yet we still need to be cautious of new obstacles [5] [8] [9]. At least we can still turn to our coping mechanisms every now and then [76]. Until then, keep following your passions throughout the new year of the snake [20] [21] [53]. Oh! And beware of the pink guards from Squid Game at war in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 & Warzone and the Junji Ito Collection in Dead by Daylight right now and feel free to give the Fantastic Four a warm welcome in the first season of Marvel Rivals later this week [11] [28] [47].
