Simmers Still Concerned But Somehow Hopeful For Project Rene

Suly suly [66]! Sometime after beating Catherine: Full Body for the fifth time, resulting in the survivals of Morgan Cortez, Abdul Bahril and Roderick Lockhart and the Normal/Bad Rin ending and beating it for the sixth time, which resulted in all the fellow sheep living and the Alternate Catherine ending [4] [9] [10], I have reflected on the time when The Sims: Town Stories, the mobile game that is still in development was leaked a year ago and the ongoing curiosity regarding Project Rene, the upcoming life-simulation project that was previously speculated to be “The Sims 5” before the widespread theory was debunked a year ago, leading to many simmers being baffled [76] [81]. As I also reflect on the likeliness of a story-centred spin-off of The Sims 4 due to the ongoing nurturing of the game that has helped it stay relevant for over a decade [24] [55] [69] [91], I suspect that there may be a Story mode in the upcoming successor to bring on an engaging rehash of The Sims Stories, as well as a new experience in a Free mode that could be about as revolutionary as The Sims 4 [76]. It has been over a week since we last discussed the potential of a new Story mode in the Sims 4 era [91], but perhaps that will be the case for the outcome of Project Rene in the future [76], so let us reflect on what was revealed regarding its development and perhaps still hope for the best after the launch of the sweet sixteenth season of Disney Speedstorm [14].

The reason why I theorised a story-focused spin-off of The Sims 4 is because of The Sims 3 being released a year after The Sims Stories was concluded [23] [25] [91]. However, since Project Rene, formerly titled “City Life Game with Friends”, has been in development for about four years due to how big and ambitious it seems [20] [65] [76], let us discuss how it can excel even future with a Story mode that as well as be part of an expansion pack to save time for the main focus on a new Free mode in the base game, despite how it will not be “The Sims 5” after all [76]. [76]

So, how about a recap of what was discussed about the huge development of Project Rene in the three episodes of Behind The Simsback in 2023 since the official teaser trailer could premiere at some point in 2026 [34] [62] [63] [64]? [76]

 
Let us start with a prototype of a residence and the ways to customise it. Around the time when Project Rene was speculated to be “The Sims 5”, it was confirmed that there would be apartments for sims to reside in [64] [76], which is a vague reminder of The Sims 2: Apartment Life [22]. If you recall snippets of footage of Project Rene from its reveal in the Behind The Sims Summit Stream Event three years ago [65], it was revealed that a new feature in Project Rene is customising objects in a workshop, changing their colours by selecting the desired ones from a colour wheel, adding patterns and customising smaller objects on a larger one, such as freely placing cushions on a sofa [64]. That sounds quite like crafting objects in the Wii, PC, and Switch versions of MySims [18] [19], doesn’t it? In a new Story mode for simmers seeking a fairly new take [91], perhaps one goal would be to freely customise the protagonist’s apartment during the first chapter [64] [65]. Considering how there will be basic weather in the base game [62], chances are that there will be an expansion focused on Winter sports and activities, which can apply to a new chapter in Story mode [91]. Currently, we know that freely customising an apartment will be a prime example of the next stage of the series’ evolution in Project Rene [64] [65].

This footage of customising a sofa somehow reminds me of when I made my own 3D models in Autodesk 3ds Max at college [15]. [65]

According to the interviews from the first and third episodes of Behind The Sims, the development team has been aiming to establish a competent multiplayer mode that could be similar to the experience of playing The Sims Online, but not to the point where it becomes an MMO, to ensure balance with focus on the familiar single player experience [62] [64] [80], which sounds quite riveting to me. Since the development of Project Rene sounds like it aims to combine certain aspects of MySims and The Sims Online [18] [19] [62] [63] [64] [80], there might as well be certain gameplay elements of The Sims Stories for a new Story mode [25] [91]. And of course, the issue surrounding players woohooing for Simoleons in The Sims Online back in the 2000s must not repeat in the final outcome of Project Rene [80]. [69] [76]

The progress of how a sim will be animated in a new virtual world looked quite promising in some prototype footage, as evident in the second episode of Behind The Sims, which also promoted The Sims 4: Horse Ranch back in June 2023 [63] [66]. First of all, there were three demonstrations on how two sims will shake hands, depending on their personality [63]. Secondly, there was a vaguely constructed visualisation of how sims will stroll through a neighbourhood, even though they somehow resembled the crewmates from Among Us in the prototype footage [6] [7]. Lastly, there was a remarkable demonstration on how a sim’s hairstyle can consist of two colours [63], which is what I believe can apply to a new incarnation (and younger) of Bella Goth, the Caliente sisters, or a brand new female character in a Story mode. Despite how disappointed some of us are in the visuals from the limited-time playtest that occurred earlier this year [1] [38] [56], let us not forget that the game will be able to play on a PC or a mobile device, thus being a crossplay experience that combines the feeling of classic gameplay on a desktop or a laptop and nurturing a sim’s life by the power of your fingertips on a smartphone or tablet [62].

This looked a little sus, don’t you think [51]? [63]

According to this sample of animation from two years ago [63], personalities of sims will once again stand out in Project Rene. I strongly hope this will be the case for its final outcome within its launch since making personalities of sim varied is quite vital for assuring the overall AI of the series will still be intact [21] [22] [23] [24]. [63]

It is understandable that plenty of us would want to see the graphics in Project Rene be about as compelling as the graphics in The Sims Mobile and The Sims 4, compared to the rather generic art style from another upcoming title known as “The Sims: Town Stories” [1] [81]. But who knows? If enough demand, the final graphics could end up looking a lot more polished and livelier and there could also be sliders added to the overall customisation of creating a sim by popular demand [1]. [69] [76]

Personally, I believe there ought to be new interpretations of beloved pre-made sims if Project Rene aims to be not necessarily be “The Sims 5” in terms of also being the next big step in the everlasting PC phase but still honour a simmer’s power to control their sims’ life under (whether their intentions are innocuous or barbaric) and also be a successor to The Sims Mobile for a reason that will be explained later [16] [76]. It has been theorised that Katrina Caliente is a second “biological” mother created by Nina and Dina through a method of cloning [63]. In Project Rene, it can be established that Katrina was created to adopt both Nina and Dina after the deaths of Flamenco and Nighat Caliente [73]. Surely, a fourth love interest for Vincent Brooks in a second enhanced port of Catherine ought to be a witch [90], which could explain how those ants got into his apartment [4], but perhaps a new love life for Don Lothario in a new Story mode can lead to some character development for him to a certain extent beyond the era of having four canon love interests [3], yet that can still be the case in Free mode. There are many possibilities, including the return of Simella De Vil, the parody of Cruella De Vil and evil twin sister of Bella Goth from The Sims Social [77].

Kudos to Mersea for patching up the plot hole regarding the Caliente family tree for some of us back in Summer 2023 [63], despite The Sims 2 and The Sims 4 being set in different continuities [3] [24] [73]. Perhaps a few of the NPCs from the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS versions of The Sims 2 can make a grand return as well [82]. I fondly remember one of my female sims on my copy of the DS version romancing with Tristan Legend back in the day [21] [29]. [73]

As previously mentioned, I am up for seeing the Caliente sisters have new hairdos as a shout-out to this customisation feature [62]; Nina’s hair being naturally red and perhaps dip-dyed blue and Dina being the blonde one but with pink dip-dye [40]. [63]

Could there be new interpretations of the characters from MySims for Project Rene, as well as some other familiar faces from the main series? Perhaps Violet Nightshade and her sister Poppy from the first MySims game for the Wii and PC can make a comeback together [18] [19] [91]I still believe that a Story centred spin-off of The Sims 4 or a Story mode in Project Rene can re-introduce Mortimer Goth and Bella Bachelor as college students or graduates renting their own apartments before their marriage as whether they went to college or not has never been established in the series before [90]. Moreover, there can be some backstory on how Dina Caliente who debuted in The Sims 2 and Jean Marc from The Sims Social gained romantic interest in them with Dina’s affection for Mortimer most likely being for his money (which is awfully familiar to one of Bella’s secrets from the PlayStation Portable version of The Sims 2 [71]) and Jean possibly just finding Bella extraordinarily attractive (and hoping to be a “Naughty Friend” of hers” [68]) [3] [91]. Surely, such possibilities can be the case in expansion packs for Project Rene and the same can apply to a new theme set in the 1920s and rehashes of Veronaville from The Sims 2, The Sims 2 Castaway and The Sims Medieval unless that will be the case for a story-centred spin-off of The Sims 4 sometime before the launch of Project Rene [62] [91].

If you fondly remember DJ Candy Supergroove and Yuki from MySims making an appearance together in The Sims 4: Get Togetherand The Sims Mobile as sisters [70] [72] [84], along with the incarnation of Vincent Skullfinder in The Sims 3 (who is sadly deceased) and the version of Chaz MacFreeling from the Sims 4 Gallery (who is one of Princess Cordelia’s ex-boyfriends), you may see the potential in more characters from the MySims series returning in Project Rene, such as Maria, Pinky and Clara Belle [48] [49] [50] [74] [83]. [70]

I am also up for some backstory on how Michael Bachelor fell in love with Dina, considering how she remembers his first kiss with him before the current events in Pleasantview in The Sims 2 [3] [75]. More importantly, there can always be updates for improving certain aspects regarding content and interactions sometime after the game’s launch as many of us recall how disappointing The Sims 4 was during its humble beginnings [86], aside from how promising the rewards system looks with to-do lists and outfits to unlock, according to a playtest and some leaks that occurred a year ago [56] [69]. [73]

I suppose a new incarnation of Chaz in Project Rene can resemble his counterpart from the cover of the Japanese version of MySimsknown as “Boku to Sims no Machi” for the Nintendo Wii [17] [74]. [17]

It is sad to hear that The Sims Mobile will no longer be available to download and play in 2026 after being delisted from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store and the future of the franchise looks bleak due to the uncertainty regarding Electronic Arts being owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund [67] [91], but a new chapter of the main franchise that is confirmed to be a spin-off instead of another follow-up of a reboot and it looks like The Sims Studio’s support for LGBTQIA+ players is not going anywhere [30] [39] [61], yet there is still some skepticism resulting in threats to boycott the franchise if their backs get stabbed [28] [54]. But still, there is hope for Project Rene to somehow excel [57]. Even though widespread praise for certain aspects can motivate developers, criticism is still important to consider as the PlayStation 5 port of Diablo IV had a troubling start after its release due to so many users making compliments regarding crashing, lagging and glitches as one could tell by a huge swarm of either angry or simply baffled tweets on X when it was still commonly referred to as “Twitter” over two years ago [5] [32] [35] [45] [46] [47]. And yes, you may recall a similar case with The Sims 3shortly after its launch back in 2009 [11] [12]. While some forms of entertainment may get shelved or are better off long forgotten due to questionable actions [31] [36] [37] [59], many others deserve to spread new wings in a new era, despite unexpected turns that may affect the progress. Arogaba!

It looks like The Sims 4: Adventure Awaits may be the last expansion pack for The Sims 4 to ensure more focus on Project Rene [55], which, so far, looks like a spiritual successor to The Sims Mobile with elements of The Sims Online and MySims [1] [20] [38] [80]. Hopefully, despite some disapproval from fellow simmers throughout its development, it will not end up like The Sims Olympus [79]. And of course, the upcoming live-action film based on the franchise has quite a lot of potential [69]. I strongly believe a story-focused version of The Sims 4 inspired by The Sims Stories can expand on the game’s lifespan alongside the humble beginnings of Project Rene [62] [91]. But for now, we will have to wait for a big update for The Sims 4 this November [2]. [79]

Some simmers miss the days of playing the PlayStation Portable version of The Sims 2 [78], its Nintendo DS counterpart [29], and even The Sims DJ on their iPods [60], but despite the uncertainty of the franchise’s future after a controversial buyout and certain content creators leaving the EA Creator Network [13] [33] [39] [91], we can count on forthcoming experiences that look or sound highly promising [26], including the third season of Helluva Boss and the first season of Lackadaisy [41] [42] [43] [44] [58] [85]. I know I can keep counting on Wade Wilson, also known as “Deadpool” [87] [88] [89]. But still, not everyone is willing to forgive and forget, despite how promising some forthcoming additions look [8] [93] [94] [95] [96] [97]. Nevertheless, let us keep helping one another and expressing our creativity [27] [52], especially while we strive against prejudice and assure that anyone can be anything [53] [92]. [78]

What Could Be Next For Captain Astro And His Fellow Bots?

Astro, the adventurous little hero created by Team Asobi is, without a doubt, one of the most adorable robots in the gaming industry in the eyes of many PlayStation players [1] [61] [62]. Ever since my fiancé got a physical copy of Astro Bot, the award-winning interactive masterpiece from me as a birthday gift, we have adored it for its ambitious level design, compelling gameplay and undeniable essence of creativity [2] [61]. As fantastic as the game is as a step up from Astro’s Playroom [62], plenty of us are wondering, “What can be next for the loveable little robot and his friends? How can the excellence of Astro Bot be topped, especially on the PlayStation 6 in a few years’ time [37]? What other forms of media can the bots be their adorable selves on?”. As Disney devotees are wide awake with Princess Aurora in the thirteenth season of Disney Speedstorm [20], Fortnite fighters are bewildered at the wrath of Darth Jar Jar in Fortnite: Battle Royale and Sonic supporters are amazed at the design of Sheriff Sonic before he speeds up in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle and Sonic Dash [28] [51] [56], let us discuss how the legacy of Astro and his fellow bots can be enriched even further after the success of Astro Bot [2].

This Spring sure has been sunnier than last Summer [10]. Some of us may miss the simpler times of how things are a decade ago or two [34], but it is still fun to discuss what forms of media can be established in the future. An example would be what could be next for Captain Astro and his fellow bots. [2]

There was a great opportunity to establish a multiplayer mode in Astro Bot that was sadly scrapped for a big focus on the best single-player experience possible [61]. A multiplayer mode in the next game or an expansion pack for Astro Bot can welcome back the assisting bot from the minigame titled “Robot Rescue” from The Playroom VR as a “Player Two” character [15] [30] [65]. The same can apply to making Shadow the Hedgehog the second player in a sequel to Sonic Frontiers or a Nintendo Switch 2 edition featuring a few other additions [55] [81] [82]. An example of an engaging multiplayer experience can be Astro and his green counterpart from Robot Rescue competing in a race like how the two hedgehogs would in 2P Battle in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle or simply roaming on a planet like two tourists exploring any of the four resorts on Kawawii Island in Go Vacation [30] [38] [39] [54] [65]. I can imagine a direct sequel to Astro Bot or an expansion pack for it featuring a local multiplayer mode two players like my fiancé and I can enjoy together or an online equivalent for two random players to both emerge with the usual single-player sanctuary at the same time in some way during a competition [15] [61]. 

Similarly, a sequel to Princess Peach: Showtime! ought to have an engaging multiplayer mode featuring Peachette or Princess Daisy as Player Two [81] [82]. [30]

There can be new power-ups based on the glider, the rocket and the frog suit from Astro’s Playroom exclusive to a zany multiplayer mode [4] [62]. And yes, there ought to be based on a specific animal, such as a flamingo being the new glider to maintain the cuteness of Astro’s connection with adorably robotic creatures [21]. [3] [4]

As amazed as we are at over three hundred of Astro’s comrades cosplaying as various stars of iconic PlayStation titles, from Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider franchise to Nathan Drake from the Uncharted games [5] [61], some of us still feel like there can be a few more exceptional examples. Perhaps two new VIP Bots can be based on Vincent Brooks from Catherine and its enhanced remake known as “Catherine: Full Body” and Rin, his third love interest who is exclusively featured in the remake that was released for the PlayStation 4 worldwide but is only available on the PlayStation Vita in Japan [76] [77] [78] [79]. There could also be another pair of VIP Bots based on Princess Plump and Princess Muffintop from Fat Princess as there was quite an amusing reference to the game in Astro’s Playroom [5] [26] [44]. And why not let a little bot based on Kit from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart make an appearance too [63] [64]? As unlikely as this sounds, a new bunch of VIP Bots to rescue can be added to an expansion pack for Astro Bot alongside an engaging multiplayer mode, much like how the expansion pack for Animal Crossing: New Horizons known as “Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise” and an expansion pack for The Sims 4 adds some engaging new features [23] [41]. But alas, those might as well be saved for a direct sequel…on the PlayStation 6, perhaps [37]?

I also believe some more new VIP Bots can be based on Coco Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot’s sister [14], Cloud from Final Fantasy VII [5] [27], Bentley from the Sly Cooper series [60], Sora from the Kingdom Hearts games and even Bubsy the Bobcat [32] [52]. I would be more than satisfied if a new batch of VIP Bots could be saved on a new planet on the left side of the selection of galaxies as part of a future update or expansion pack for Astro Bot [61]. Could that be the case for celebrating the game’s first anniversary this September [2]? After all, a bunch of bots based on certain characters from Baldur’s Gate 3 and the video game based on Monopoly that was released almost a year ago are speculated to appear in a future update [2] [5] [73]. [5]

Considering how lively the animations of all the adorable bots are in Astro’s Playroom and Astro Bot [61] [62], there could be an animated series starring the pint-sized captain of the PlayStation 5 and his crew mates. Aside from that it may be advised to write each episode chronically for the sake of a plot that could be more intellectually stimulating than a bunch of random running gags in Garfield Originals [69] [70] [71] [72], I strongly believe the portrayal of Astro in either a cute 2D art style based on the comic and poster that comes with the physical release of Astro Bot or the cinematic 3D aesthetic adapted from the cutscenes will be as inspiringly wholesome as Hello Kitty’s portrayal in Sweet Moments With Hello Kitty, also known as “Hello Kitty Fun” [66] [67] [83] [84]. I suspect that the prime conflict of the series would like the one caused by Space Bully Nebulax in Astro Bot; Astro’s fellow bots in need of saving across the universe [61], yet the settings and certain power-ups for him can be based on the levels in Astro’s Playroom to prevent the overall narrative design of Astro Bot from being completely recycled [62]. Whether a series of animated shorts will be on Netflix, Prime Video or YouTube, I am sure that they will be quite compelling as they consist of the charm of what made Astro Bot acclaimed aside from its excellent gameplay elements [2] [61].

This cutie pie deserves his own animated series, whether it will be a webseries on YouTube or available to watch on a streaming service, much like how Princess Peach: Showtime! deserves a sequel on the Nintendo Switch 2 [81] [82]. Because of how pricelessly cute he is, I would not be surprised if his own animated series was an anime. [3]

As I read the first volume of the hilarious manga based on Animal Crossing: New Horizons known as the “Deserted Island Diary” series on the way back from seeing the stage musical adaption of Back To The Future and revisiting the London Eye in honour of its 25^th anniversary in London [8] [35] [40] [53], I suspected that Astro could star in his own official manga series as well. The art style on each cover of each volume can be like the art style in the manual formed into a comic from the physical version of Astro Bot [66] [67]. Story-wise, each volume can be based on the events of the game, but expanded with some missed opportunities, such as a moment of Astro powering up with the abilities of Rivet from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Croc from Croc: Legend of the Gobbos and its remaster or Ms. Croft to raid a new tomb [11] [61] [63] [64]. As much as I would love to read a manga promoting a soft reboot of Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine that is also a crossover with Puyo Puyo [85] [86], a manga series starring Astro sounds more likely to me. Moreover, it can be about as adorable and quirky as the Kirby Manga Mania series [33]. But of course, I have nothing against it being a comic book series being read the other way instead [88].

Featuring the VIP bots based on Ratchet, Clank and Rivet in a manga series based on Astro Bot can somehow make up for how dissatisfying and strangely bizarre the Ratchet & Clank manga was to some of us [48], but alas, a new Ratchet & Clank manga set after the events of Rift Apart ought to be exceptional, especially in preparation for the big moment when Ratchet FINALLY encounters his race in the next game [49] [50] [63] [64]. [50]

Isn’t this comic the coolest and cutest [67]? A great alternative to an Astro Bot manga can be a graphic novel, but as previously stated, an adventure to read, either from left to right or right to left ought to be about as delightful as the ones we played [61] [62] [65] [90]. So, why not both? [67]

Astro Bot deserved to be titled “Game of the Year” in 2024 and I would love to see the cute little robot’s cred grow in the future [2]. In the meantime, gamers must brace themselves for a spine-chilling Five Nights At Freddy’s event in Dead by Daylight and three new figures from YouTooz based on Adam, Niffty and Lucifer from Hazbin Hotel await the hands of my fellow hazbeans near the end of MerMay [17] [78] [79] [80] [88] [89]. Aside from expansions, recreations and brand new establishments to discuss and look forward to [7] [29] [46] [68], plenty of us still need to keep expressing imaginativeness to help us through the troubles we may be facing on social media or in real life [13] [22] [24], such as racism, homophobia, transphobia, exploitation or the loss of a loved one [12] [57] [76] [77]. As we show some appreciation for fanmade projects, such as Sonic Runners Deluxe, a fanmade recreation of Sonic Runners that is currently in development [58] [59], let us show our support for the LGBTQIA+ community in preparation for Pride Month this year [6] [76] [77], especially after the sales of amazing Pride Month-themed Helluva Boss merchandise [36]. I do not doubt that Captain Astro would be supportive in honour of acceptance and equality as some of us have theorised that he is ultimately non-binary or agender [19] [45], aside from how Kaa from The Jungle Book can be considered genderfluid and Yuck from Yin Yang Yo! is possibly bigender [74] [75].

Smile for the cutie wootie [1]! I am not saying that the ideas I have expressed will definitely happen, but we can still remain hopeful. Regardless of what garbage bigoted and hypocritical people may spew online [12] [25] [87], remember that you can do anything you put your mind, soul and heart into [16]. Keep doing a hobby that makes you happy, such as cosplaying, photography or poetry [9] [16] [47] [80]. Speaking of happiness, Happy 45^th Anniversary, Pac-Man and Happy 70^th Anniversary, Disneyland in California [18] [31] [42] [43]! [1]
