Hoping For The Next Animal Crossing Game For The Nintendo Switch 2

The Animal Crossing series began with the original version of Dōubutsu no Mori, also known as “Animal Forest” on the Nintendo 64 exclusively in Japan [24]. An upgraded port was established as three versions for the Nintendo GameCube; one titled “Dōubutsu no Mori+” for Japanese players that came out first [5] [55], the other named “Dōubutsu no Mori e+” with new villagers, items and gameplay elements and compatibility with the e-Reader and one localised especially for English-speaking players known as “Animal Crossing” or “Animal Crossing: Population Growing” [24] [56]. Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival was considered a disappointing Mario Party wannabe on the Wii U [23], but at least the fairly underrated console’s backwards compatibility resulted in re-experiencing Animal Crossing: City Folk, also known as “Animal Crossing: Let’s Go To The City” [41], which also applied to an animal crosser who ran their town in Animal Crossing: New Leaf replaying Animal Crossing: Wild World occasionally on a 3DS [44]. Earlier this year, there was a super sweet collaboration with Godiva, but what would be even sweeter is a satisfying new interactive experience [11]. Furthermore, since the Nintendo Direct centred on the full potential of the Nintendo Switch 2 will premiere next month [102] [103], let us once again discuss how a follow-up of Animal Crossing: New Horizons could balance the new with the nostalgic to appeal to both old-school players and newcomers [12] [94] [95].

I am not the only animal crosser dreaming of an enlightening new chapter of the franchise [37]. What else can we hope for aside from my previous predictions [94] [95]? [48]

I stand by how the biggest improvement would be gaining expansions of the island in all four cardinal directions and all four ordinal directions of a compass [92] [93] [94] [95]. Perhaps the maximum number of villagers who can live on the central part of the island can be eight, just like in Wild World but the population will increase when it expands [44]. Aside from a campsite and a cabin in the West or East [43], there can even be a splendid hotel that is more effective than the one in Happy Home Designer in the expansion of the city in the Northwest or Northeast where former residents can stay [40] [61]. The South, Southwest or Southeast part can be where the lighthouse duties from Population Growing could return aside from some more residents being considered “islanders” [28], which sounds familiar if you fondly remember playing the enhanced telling of the first chapter on the GameCube [55] [56]. I shall not judge if a fellow animal crosser would prefer their Main Street to be located in the South and their tropical resort to be somewhere in the North as the freedom to customise an island in New Horizons could be enriched with seven expansions being new rewards for hard work put into its evolution in the next game for the Switch 2 [42].

I know what some of you are thinking. How come we can start our island with the Central part if there needs to be a beach for fishing and collecting shells [41] [42] [43] [44]? Well, the South, Southwest and Southeast parts of the evolving island can be separate islands connected by bridges. Perhaps there could be the option to choose the type of environment each part of the island will provide, such as a forest for a camper’s experience in the East, a deserted landscape in the Southeast, a meadowland in the West and a tropical island in the Southwest [37] [94] [95]. [75]

Speaking of choices, the buildings in the city and plaza ought to be customised, especially for those who prefer New Leaf over New Horizons [82] [94] [95]. Perhaps the Reset Surveillance Centre can return as an underground hideout that can be discovered after breaking a rock with a shovel or after a manhole cover has been opened [24] [72]. [72]

Since some of us would love to see new flora flourish in the next game [94] [95], could there be new or familiar fish and insects to catch? The herabuna who only appeared in Animal Forest, its original GameCube port and its Chinese counterpart could return to the rivers in the next game for the Switch 2 [7]. The same can apply to the brook trout that replaces the herabuna in the Population Growing and the third Japanese version of the original era [4]. I also think the red carp from Dòngwù Sēnlín, the Chinese version of Dōubutsu no Mori could return as well [51] [54]. As for bugs, I think the pine cricket from the first generation can come back alongside the greater blue skimmer and the cockroach that can hopefully be caught instead of stomped on [41] [42] [44] [50]. Aside from some old and new bugs and fish to catch [50] [58], I think the original princess bed from Dōubutsu no Mori e+: Doubutsu-tachi to Asobou! ought to make a regal comeback in a faintly updated style for both Japanese AND Western players who would love to see it return and the I Love 64 and N Cube shirts from the original Nintendo 64 version of Dōubutsu no Mori can also return for the old school gamers as Easter eggs [5] [55] [57] [71].

Can you imagine this carp on a cutting board [51] [54]? On second thought, it might not be best to imagine that during a trip to New Horizons’ big collaboration with the SEA LIFE Centre [21]... [51]

As for fossils, do you not suppose the apatosaurus and the dinosaur egg will return to make up for their absences in New Horizons [59], no? It would be cool if the display bases would consist of a colour around the edges, just like the unused fossil bases from the development of the first generation [70]. [59]

Aside from a Pride Day event that could occur on the 14th of June as a Valentine’s Day on Pride Month to encourage acceptance of healthy same-sex relationships [102] [103], what other seasonal events in a successor to New Horizons can be established? I would love to see the Cherry Blossom Festival from the original Dōubutsu no Mori and its English and Chinese counterparts come back. Bringing back Yay Day from Wild World would be about as wholesome as vibes of a Hello Kitty cartoon [26] [52] [98] [99]. Speaking of a special day in Wild World, I also think the Acorn Festival can return because Tortimer playing the role of his alter-ego Cornimer is hilarious [26]. On second thought, bringing back the Flower Fest would result in the result of the Flower Fest trophies, which would be splendid as I adore their designs. Perhaps there can be an island anniversary to celebrate, much like how an animal crosser can celebrate the anniversaries of the town they run in New Leaf - Welcome amiibo [76]. A bigger priority would be assuring the same festiveness of Easter, Halloween, Christmas and New Year’s Day, but it would be amazing to see a special event from the first generation, Wild World or New Leaf - Welcome amiibo return in the next chapter on the Switch 2 [26] [76].

Saharah is another special character who is male in the Japanese and Korean versions of the games but female in all the other versions [74], which makes me suspect that she is either transgender, genderfluid or bigender and I believe she can benefit from celebrating Pride Day alongside Gracie, who could either be transgender or bigender, Celeste, who is possibly a lesbian and Isabelle, who is considered pansexual or panromantic [94] [95]. Chances are the Blanca is non-binary and could go by They/Them pronouns in the next chapter if you think about it [49]. Still mad about LGBTQIA+ “propaganda” these days [106]? Remember all those who joined unions in The Sims 2 [17] [18]? [74]

As unlikely as this sounds, the Cherry Blossom Festival ought to return for the blossom petals falling gracefully from their trees in the Spring, resulting in villagers snacking on both Japanese AND Western food to reunite the tastiness of both kinds from the festival in the first generation as the outdoor picnic set from New Horizons is a solid example of that [9] [85]. [52]

Do you miss a certain villager who has been absent from the games since Wild World [29]? Perhaps any of them can return in the next chapter for the Switch 2 aside from the ones who returned in the free Version 2.0 update for New Horizons [48]. These villagers who have been missing from the series for twenty years include:
  •       Cupcake, a snooty bear cub [29]
  •       Jane, a snooty gorilla who got redesigned in Population Growing for a pretty obvious reason [29] [63]
  •       Otis, a lazy bird [29]
  •       Pigleg, a jock pig who is allergic to peaches [29] [68]
  •       Huggy, a peppy koala who also got redesigned in Population Growing [8] [29]
  •       Woolio, a jock sheep who looks like a punk rocker [29]
  •       Chuck, a cranky bull [29]
  •       Clara, a normal hippo [29]
Despite the infamous and potentially hilarious rudeness of villagers in Population Growing [96] [97], many of these villagers who only appeared in the first generation or at least some of them may be brought into the next one, especially by the power of new amiibo cards to further prove for Switch 2’s backwards compatibility, which would also be a reminder of the e-cards from the days of the first generation [6]. But of course, there ought to be enough room for brand new villagers, such as a sisterly tiger and a smug monkey [94] [95]. Aside from that, the ability to wave at any villager ought to return for some extra wholesomeness [41].

A new wave of amiibo cards can feature updated designs for those lost residents. Better not let Brutus the Bulldog be part of a big reunion though [20]. Just joking! Teehee! [8]

And did you know that there are a bunch of villagers who only appeared in Dōubutsu no Mori e+, the expanded version of the enhanced port of the original Dōubutsu no Mori for the Nintendo GameCube that was also exclusively released in Japan [56]? These characters include:
  •       Kit, a jock squirrel [56]
  •       Tarou, a jock wolf [56]
  •       Sunny, a normal frog [56]
  •       Gen, a jock sheep [56]
  •       Aisle, a lazy bear cub [56]
  •       Analog, a jock penguin [56]
  •       Carrot, a normal cow [56]
  •       Joe, a cranky bird [56]
  •       Patricia, a normal rhinoceros who is an islander alongside seventeen other residents [56]
Perhaps some of these residents (except for any of the ones from promotional e-Reader cards) can reappear alongside the chosen ones from all three versions of Dōubustu no Moriand their English and Chinese counterparts as part of a new wave of amiibo cards [42] [56]. I am not saying that they all have to, but I am up for giving players outside of Japan some more of what they missed out on. The same thing can be said about a revival of the Nazo Puyo series [102] [103], which might not happen, but some of us can still dream of a remake of Minna de Puyo Puyo, also known as “Puyo Pop”, “Everybody Puyo Puyo” and “Puyo Pop GBA” [100] [101].

Did you know that there was a squirrel named “Shaki” who sadly did not appear without memory editing in the first generation? It would be a miracle to see her finally be seen in an updated design that might as well consist of ruby moon fur in the next one on the Switch 2 with her true personality beaming [19]. Building friendships with animals has been a virtue in the series since the enhancement of interaction with them Dōubutsu no Mori e+ and a big bonus would be customising a new villager in the next chapter on the Switch 2 [60], much like how an animal crosser would in Dōubutsu no Mori e+ with the e-Reader [24] [56]. [73]

There is still hope that the villagers based on certain characters from two other Nintendo IPs who debuted in New Leaf – Welcome amiibo will be added to the next game on the Switch 2 as part of an update or a DLC pack [62] [66] [78] [94] [95]. Perhaps there could be also a few new ones, such as a lazy or cranky penguin based on King Dedede from the Kirby franchise [24]. [78]

Surely, some special characters ought to bring back certain features from the previous main games or receive a little further development [94] [95]. Brewster could store gyroids at the cafe in the museum again and I hope that the constellations you can construct with Celeste in the observatory will return as well [27] [53]. Could Pete be a target in the sky like how he was in Wild World again or would that be considered too mean nowadays [26]? Well, villagers can be notoriously rude in Wild World too. Reflecting on his juicy love triangle [41] [44], I think Orville or Wilbur could develop a crush on Pelly if she and her sister Phyllis were to reprise their roles and the post office and the airport are separated [42], as crazy as that sounds. It would be funny to see Tom Nook working in his pyjamas before opening hours like in Dōubutsu no Mori e+ again [24] [56], but I kind of doubt that it will happen in the next chapter. Perhaps Digby, Isabelle’s brother could admit to having feelings for Lottie as a sign of them going steady sometime soon [65]. Aside from some other progressions for service characters, perhaps Vicious Vole Vinnie, Don and Sonny Resetti’s cousin will finally make an appearance in the next game on the Switch 2, as intimidating as he sounds [64]…

Chances are that Vinnie would be even more antagonistic than Redd, Resetti and Tom Nook combined [35] [41]… [64]

Perhaps, there can be some way to help Nat and his son Flick cast their different views on insects aside and form a greatly improved father-and-son bond [67], which would provide some great character development for them. [67]

What other features do some of us miss and would like to see in a follow-up to New Horizons? Perhaps the pockets screen can be customisable again but without the need of a shirt [28] [69]. Those quirky emotes, especially the animal faces from Population Growing can return in a new style to add some character to letters for villagers [22]. Reflecting on my suggestion to add a new service that can be accessed on a new laptop fittingly named a “Nooktop” [102] [103], it can provide a modern adaption of the journal from Population Growing, especially for all the bloggers out there. Perhaps the wishing well from Population Growing and Dōubutsu no Mori e+ can also return in the plaza in the Central part of the island for some more Generation One flair [77] [85]. Not all of what was absent in the previous titles have to return as some features and events that seem to be exclusive to the previous experiences may only be left in them to provide a few reasons for animal crossers to come back to them occasionally, but it would be cool to be at least a few of them come back by popular demand as some fellow animal crossers would love some old school essences in a new chapter [102] [103]. Who knows? They can always be added to the game as part of updates or DLC.

Some of us would love to see beautifully coloured sunsets and sunrises like the ones from Wild World in the next chapter [37]. Each instalment of the main Animal Crossing series is illustrious in their own way [22] [41] [42] [44], so the next one ought to provide a proportion of each generation aside from brand new enhancements in my opinion. [3]

As previously mentioned, some opportunities that were missed can always be hit in a free update or a DLC pack like Happy Home Paradise for New Horizons [94] [95]. [48]

As previously stated, the next Animal Crossing ought to provide the best of New Leaf and New Horizons, along with some brand new features and possibly notable aspects of Population Growing and Wild World [94] [95]. Not all these suggestions have to commence, but the game still ought to be a form of escapism to help an animal crosser forget the troubles they may have with toxic people on social media and in real life [32] [33] [91] [104]. Since the forthcoming successor to the Nintendo Switch is basically named the “Nintendo Switch 2” [102] [103], the next chapter of the Animal Crossing series might as well be titled “Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2” [2], but what is more important than a considerably better title is honouring what made the previous titles best-sellers [12]. There is also hope for a third game in the Super Mario Maker series simply titled “Super Mario Maker 3” on the Switch 2 that allows Nintendo nerds to create their own levels in the style of Super Mario Wonder [45]. In the meantime, it will not be long until I purchase Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise as a birthday gift and an addition to my experience in the fourth generation of the Animal Crossing franchise and I give some kudos to Aurum for an exceptional mod of City Folk named “Animal Crossing: City Folk Deluxe” he created [89] [102] [103].

As nonsensical as this sounds, another reason why I suspect that the next Animal Crossing game for the Switch 2 may be titled “Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2” is because of the cancelled game that was titled “Animal Crossing 2” [2] [96] [97]. Nevertheless, its official title ought to sound more enlightening as there was a complaint from a fan regarding titles of Nintendo 64 games that was answered quite irrationally in an issue of Nintendo Power [83]. I believe that Animal Crossing 2 would have provided the features that were exclusive to Dōbutsu no Mori e+ [24], especially for Western animal crossers and what would debut in Wild World and/or City Folk [41] [44]. Aside from a follow-up to New Horizons on the Switch 2, Nintendo nerds are hoping for a well-deserved sequel to Tomodachi Life [36] [46][2]

I may have no choice but to retire from video game journalism at some point due to ongoing toxicity and hurtful misunderstandings [38] [81] [88], but as always, I thank all my friends and followers for their compassion and support as I still stand by my right to be a happy Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss fan alongside many other hazbeans’ rights [1] [10] [16] [31] [39] [84] [105]. I also stand by my fellow animal crossers’ rights to relish in the tranquillity and wholesomeness of the series [30] [47], even if it is considered “cozy capitalism” [34], especially if they happen to be facing some recent difficulties in real life. As you count those blessings, keep expressing your creativity either outside of the artistry of your favourite cartoons, games and such or undoubtedly inspired by them [80] [86] [87], no matter how problematic some people may be to you [14] [15] [79] [90]. [2]
