Before Hello Kitty and several other adorable icons from Sanrio entered the world of Minecraft [35], the Angry Video Game Nerd announced his own Nintendo Entertainment System game and a new line of Helluva Boss plushies was revealed for pre-ordering [26] [27] [28] [69], we pondered the likeliness of a sequel to Princess Peach: Showtime! and a soft reboot of Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine for the upcoming successor to the Nintendo Switch that is simply named the “Nintendo Switch 2” [46] [86] [108] [109] [113] [114]. And yes, a modern adaptation of a classic quest to defeat Robotnik ought to be published for the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X|S and Windows as well. It ought to consist of the usual compelling gameplay in a Puyo Puyo game and a few delightful adventures within a well-thought-out crossover [113] [114]. What do I mean in terms of a passable plot for “Dr. Eggman’s Mean Puyo Machine”? As a writer, I understand that a rather compelling plot consisting of mild or strong character development would be more necessary for a visual novel than a puzzle game, yet Catherine was praised for how its story handled Vincent Brooks’ infidelity in a morally grey way [10], but there should still be some effort put into a crossover that should be more satisfying than several others [37] [113] [114]. 

Fans of the classic Puyo Puyo games know that Satan can be just as diabolical as Eggman as he cast a spell to enlarge the sun in Puyo Puyo Sun [1] [49], which can be considered the opposite of the Eggster blowing up half of the moon in Sonic Adventure 2 [72] [73]. [53]

 
What other possibilities are there to dream of or at least predict regarding a soft reboot of Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine? Well, it would be consistent to let Metal Sonic be a foe as part of Eggman and Satan’s plan in contrast to the henchbots in the promotional localisation of Puyo Puyo from the ‘90s [86] [112]. Perhaps Sonic can encounter Amitie once again, acknowledging that they have met in the event promoting Puyopuyo!! Quest in Sonic Runners at some point in his story that would be ideal for intermediate players [76]. In contrast to Tails, Amy or Elise being the main character in a beginner’s course that ought to be more adventurous than the RunRun course in Puyo Pop Fever [71], Shadow the Hedgehog can be the star of an expert’s course in “Dr. Eggman’s Mean Puyo Machine” [75], much like Raffina’s perspective being for expert players of Puyo Pop Fever [71]. More importantly, the Exercise Mode from the original game can return in a soft reboot for new players to practise their skills [86]. It also worked for tomb raiders who trained with Ms. Croft at her mission [107], didn’t it? There have been quite a lot of different game modes throughout the Puyo Puyo series [58] [71], but I think there should only be a few for “Dr. Eggman’s Mean Puyo Machine”, especially from Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 [100] [113] [114]. I would be thrilled to see a 4-player battle mode, especially with the option to play as teams from Puyo Pop Fever [71]. That way, Sonic and Carbuncle can work together to defeat Eggman and Satan. The same applies to a chaotic 8-player battle mode. Similar to how the Mission Mode from Mario Kart DS could return in Mario Kart 9 [110] [111], “Dr. Eggman’s Mean Puyo Machine” could provide a mission mode based on puzzle-solving elements of the Nazo Puyo games as an additional experience, aside from a training mode for new players to work on their skills and build their confidence for shortly forthcoming matches [58] [59] [86].

I remember the Endless Mission mode in Puyo Pop Fever and how comparable it was to the Mission mode in Tetris DS [45] [71], which is why I believe that a Mission mode would be a swell feature in “Dr. Eggman’s Mean Puyo Machine”. As for the experience of playing with a fellow Puyo Puyo player that can either be online or offline, just imagine Sonic, Elise, Arle and Carbuncle battling against Eggman, Satan, Sage and Metal Sonic [112]! Oh! I would BEG for an interactive credits sequence after the final battle in Story mode [71] [74]! [58]

Any more ideas for an additional crossover within a DLC pack [113] [114]? Well, since the Puyo Puyo series is primarily a spin-off of the Madou Monogatari series [61], I suspect that another option can be some involvement with some of the main cast of Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God, the first and seemingly only Madou Monogatari game to be released in North America and Europe with an English dub aside from Madou Monogatari: Secret of Elysium being exclusively in Korean primarily for South Korean players [25] [57] [65]. Alternatively, featuring the stars of Madou Monogatari: Fia and the Mysterious School would be considered more up-to-date (and consistent for a reason) as it was released in Japan in November 2024 [55]. As unlikely as this sounds, a soft reboot of Kidou Gekidan Haro Ichiza: Haro no Puyo Puyo can commence in a bonus chapter with the cooperation of Bandai Namco [54]. Aside from some more hearty partnerships, there might as well be some witty jabs at Qwirks and Cranky Food Friends, two notorious adaptions of Puyo Puyo some Western players may recognise [50] [63]. As previously mentioned, “Dr. Eggman’s Mean Puyo Machine” ought to only crossover with less than four other franchises when it comes to DLC to avoid becoming overly reliant on crossovers for relevancy, which is what Minecraft seems to be these days [35] [36].

A DLC pack featuring the heroes of Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God, the main characters from Madou Monogatari: Fia and the Mysterious School or the best of both would help many Western players acknowledge that the Puyo Puyo series is a spin-off of the Madou Monogatari series [25] [55] [65]. Furthermore, he could be Sonic’s new sidekick in the story of a reactivated machine. [51]

Even though I no longer consider myself a Sonic the Hedgehog fan for my mental well-being [7] [11] [31], I still admire the blur speedster for his wit and heroism and I am thankful for the fond memories I have of playing the Wii versions of Sonic Colours and Sonic Unleashed and when he was a comfort character during a hard time at high school [74] [79]. Once again, I am not saying that a modern adaptation of Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine will definitely be in development anytime soon [17] [22] [113] [114], but I am always up for a discussion regarding creative potential. I would also like to witness a competent spin-off of the Animal Crossing series consisting of the visuals from New Horizons as part of the fourth generation or a sequel beginning a new one on the upcoming successor to the Nintendo Switch [4] [43] [46], but as always, we will have to wait and see. Aside from our hopes for a marvellous era of gaming on the Nintendo Switch 2 starting with its release later this year, let us prepare for the second Kickstarter campaign for Rad Venture this March [32] [33], the launch of South of Midnight this April and a stop-motion series starring My Melody and Kuromi on Netflix this July [15] [41]. And yes, I shall continue to follow my passions in writing and so on [103] [108] [109], despite how I miss the simpler times of 2012, 2013 and 2014 [23] [95] [96] [97] [98]. Well, most of them [8] [9] [24] [94] [98] [99].

Hopefully, Carby will not devour a sword before going on a quest with Sonic [68]. And surely, the blue blur is too smart to fall for the weirdest magic trick you could ever see in a cartoon [13], right? And why not let Silver the Hedgehog star in his own game to level up the credibility of his telekinetic powers someday [21] [101]? Speaking of enhanced credibility, perhaps the next chapter of the Animal Crossing franchise can feature an animal crosser’s island being expanded in any of the eight directions, starting with North for a street quite like the city from City Folk, the Main Street in New Leaf or the one in Happy Home Designer throughout the game’s progression [5] [6] [42] [44]. Creativity can almost never be crushed [16] [30] [38] [39] [70], so be sure to check to a new trio of Hazbin Hotel figures from YouTooz near the end of this month [116] [117]! [87]

We have three years to hope for the best outcome of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, the fourth film distributed by Paramount Pictures [90] [93], despite the risk of a shark being jumped. In the meantime, we can continue to encourage justice, equality and compassion as same-sex marriage was rightfully legalised in Thailand a few days ago and thousands of people are paying their respects to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust [14] [47] [48] [91] [115]. [90]
